Napoleon Hill was one of the earliest writers in America of the success principle alone without leaning toward the “New Thought” movement. Taking the philosophy of earlier writer’s in America whose writing leaned toward “New Thought,” Hill branched out and began a genre of business success writing that took off from that point and gave impetus to the teachers of “The Secret.” His most famous work, Think and Grow Rich is one of the best-selling books of all time. In America, Hill stated in his writings, people are free to believe what they want to believe, (note from writer: at least they were when he wrote his book of success principles) and this is what sets this country apart from all other countries in the world. Hill's works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve" is one of his most famous quotations. He promised in his book that achievement of success was within the reach of everyone.

Hill called his success teachings "The Philosophy of Achievement" and he considered freedom, democracy, capitalism, and harmony as the most important elements. For without these, Hill wrote throughout, personal beliefs are not possible. He contrasted his philosophy with others, and thought Achievement was superior and responsible for the success Americans enjoyed for the better part of two centuries. Fear and selfishness had no part to play in his philosophy, and Hill considered them to be the source of failure for unsuccessful people.

Even though he never spoke precisely or plainly of the Secret of Achievement, nevertheless he felt if his readers could discover it for themselves it would be of more benefit to them than if he simply laid it out on the table. He believed that the majority of individuals in this world have no firm beliefs, thus putting true success out of their reach.

Hill's numerous books have sold millions of copies, proving that the Secret of Achievement is still highly sought-after by modern Americans. Hill dealt with many controversial subjects through his writings including racism, slavery, oppression, failure, revolution, war and poverty. Persevering and then succeeding in spite of these obstacles using the philosophy of Achievement, Hill stated, was the responsiblity of every American. Three cheers for Napoleon Hill!
