COGITO ERGO SUM

descartes“I THINK, THEREFORE I AM.”
JUNE 8, 2010
Commentary by Patricia Boyer

On this date three hundred seventy-three years ago in the year 1637, Rene Descartes published his magnificent Discourse on the Method for Guiding One’s Reason and Searching for Truth in the Sciences, the source of his famous quote in his native tongue,  “Je pense, donc je suis.”  This is the writing which led mankind into understanding the natural world through reason and it formed the foundation of the scientific method still in use today.  He expressed his preference for mathematics as the basis of his new method “because,” he said, “of the certainty and self-evidence of the way it reasons.”

In his essay titled “Geometry,” Descartes explained his Cartesian coordinate system that allows geometric shapes to be expressed in algebraic equations. It is the foundation of analytic geometry, which influenced the development of calculus and is widely used to this day. Cartesian coordinates are the most common coordinate system used in computer graphics, computer-aided geometric design, and other geometry-related data processing.

I invite you to read his short biography here in the “Past Great Thinkers” section of this website.  You can find it by clicking on the “Great Thinkers” button above.

We are happy to celebrate such a great occasion on this website.  Rene Descartes almost singlehandedly led the human race out of the dark ages.  Long before the publication of his Discourse, he had been working on a new physics called “The World, or a Treatise on Light.” Just before it went to print, Descartes learned of Galileo’s having been condemned by the Inquisition for his theories about the Earth revolving around the sun.  While Galileo escaped being burned at the stake by recanting his theory, Descartes decided it would be the better part of wisdom simply to hold on to his work a little while longer.  His work was not published until twelve years after his death in 1662.   He had anticipated the church’s reaction correctly.  In 1663 “The World, or a Treatise on Light” was placed on the Index of Prohibited Books by the Pope.

The “Discourse on Method” marked the beginning of the Scientific Revolution, and remains one of the most important works in the history of science.

WISDOM FROM THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS

SimonTempleton  has given us this beautiful description of Ka’Huna in his book titled “Revolutionary Positive Thinking” that is found free on his website “PsiTek.net (along with so many other books filled with the  wisdom of the ages).

KaHunaWISDOM FROM THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS - knowledge they refer to as “KAHUNA.”

This is not an occult system, but is based on human psychology. Huna simply emphasizes basic, normal living in every aspect of life. It is a day to day road map for traveling through life.

The basic beliefs of Huna can actually be summed up in two simple ideas: ‘no hurt’- ’no sin.’  Sin would be anything hurtful to yourself or to others. And the other idea basic to Huna belief is that you must serve to deserve. This means you must be of help to others in order to feel worthy of goodness in your own life.

Believers of Huna are taught that the human being consists of: (1) the body, (2) the mind, which encompasses the conscious (uhane - the middle self) and the subconscious (unihipili - low self), and (3) the aumakua (super conscious - high self).

The concept of a deity was considered one step above the high self and is actually believed to be a part of the human personality: and that we have a divine connection. Believers use the triangular symbol to denote that once we have all three of ourselves working in harmony; we are in perfect communication. All the selves must do their separate jobs and work together in order to achieve our potential as humans and spiritual beings.

When all three are working harmoniously together to solve a problem in the here and now, or striving towards a better future, and things begin to happen, it may appear to be a miracle. Believers, however, do not believe that this is in any way supernatural, but simply the natural order of things working as they are supposed to work.

1. Eke‘: The World Is What You Think It Is
Everything in our world, everything in our own reality, comes from our thoughts. We share this with friends, family, co-workers, and everyone else. According to the Huna belief, if we would change our world, we must change our thoughts. It is a waste of time and energy to try and change the outer world on our own.  We must begin by changing ourselves, if we wish to help change the world. It begins with us. We must change the way we think, going from a belief in lack to a belief in abundance. This is Eke’ working within to create the outer world. All the other principles of Huna stem from this one.

2. Kala: We Are All Connected; There Is No Separation and No Limits
Everything in the universe is connected. Our minds and bodies are connected, as well as earth to man, plants, animals, sky, and ocean. We are all connected and the separation we perceive is merely an illusion. It’s only our thoughts that make us believe we are separate from the rest. According to the Huna belief, this causes an illness in humankind. Underneath this sense of separation is the connection.  If we rid ourselves of these thoughts of separateness, we will reconnect, become one again, and be healed. The expression they use in the islands is “hang loose,” which simply means when you get uptight, you create a tension, which in turn causes the separation. When you “hang loose,” you relax, you feel better, your relationships become better, and you go with the flow. Kala does not mean that you must accept things as they are; only that if you relax with them, you can change them more easily.

3. Makea: Energy Flows Where Attention Goes
Events are created wherever there is a flow of energy and attention. Focusing your attention on a particular object or idea causes the energy to flow in that direction. Whatever the nature of your thoughts is, you feel that flow in return. Positive energy put out into the universe, means positive energy flowing back to you. The same goes for negative energy. If you put negative energy out into the universe, it will return to you as well. If you put out thoughts of abundance, not occasionally but consistently, then abundance flows back to you. You can develop the skill that will begin to bring the positive energy back into your life. Do not focus on anger or fear, but on happiness and joy. Change your attention and you change your world.

4. Manoua: Now Is The Time Of Power
This is to teach you to remain in the moment. There is no power in the past and no power in the future. There is only power in this moment, right now. The past has no power over you, so you must release the burdens of the past. Whatever thoughts you possess are what you will bring with you into this moment. If you have beauty in your life, you will create beauty.  And you must increase that beauty by appreciating it right now. If you stop appreciating the beauty, you will lose your sense of beauty and it will disappear from your life. Appreciating what’s around you causes it to increase. The more you take pleasure in what’s around you, the stronger it becomes. According to the Huna belief, the future does not lay waiting for you to move forward and run into it. It is created in every present moment by what you think right now. Getting rid of the past creates a new future.

5. Aloha: Love, Pure And Simple
The root of the word means, “to be happy with.” The secret here is that to love is to be happy with something or someone. The degree of your happiness dictates the degree to which you are in love. The expression of love is important. Letting in criticism, anger, and unhappiness will diminish that love and cause pain around you. Love does not mean inflicting pain, hurting people, or getting yourself hurt. Love means savoring the happiness, the joy, and the pleasure in any relationship.

6. Mana: Divine, Creative Power Or Life Force
This belief presupposes that there is only one source of power and that the source flows through each of us on the planet. It flows not only through human beings, but through the earth and everything that lives on it or above it. Mana is considered the inner power that gives each thing its own creativity. Mana is the power of the sea, and the wind through the clouds. It is the power of human beings to be creative. The important idea here is that power comes from within.  Nothing outside of yourself has any power over you. Your very existence stems from this power within; and if you believe that something else has any real power over you, it diminishes your own power. Holding it back, trying to tamp it down, or pretending you don’t have the power, also diminishes it. By allowing yourself to experience this power, to feel it, to use it, and claim it, gives you the power to reach your highest potential.

7. Pono: Effectiveness Is The Measure Of Truth
There is no one way to do anything. There is always an alternative. We are not stuck doing things one way forever. There is no one truth, or one method or technique. There is no one kind of medicine or one way to be happy. The ways you can use to achieve your goals and attain happiness are myriad. And nothing is carved in stone. Your purpose or plan may be of paramount importance, but the methods to achieving them are vast.  Use the proper means to achieve the goal. For instance, if what you desire is peace, you must use peaceful means to achieve that goal. Violence is inappropriate, because it only begets more violence. According to this principle of Huna, if you start out with peace in your heart, you will move towards peace in your life. This principle is a practical truth and may be used as a way of living with others and yourself.

Someone in Hawaii said:   “If you are not using Huna, you are working too hard.”

Note from Pat:  Ho'oponopono, is a prayer to make it right with your ancestors, with your neighbor, with a family member, with yourself, with whatever that needs to be righted, and should be repeated many times during the day:

This is Ho'oponopono prayer:  "I am sorry.  Please forgive me.  I love you.  Thank you."

Introduction to Thinking Is Causative by Patricia Boyer

worldThe human family has come a long, long way over several million years.

It is our belief that even before recorded history there were individuals born from time to time who could see and understand what they truly were.  They knew that they could “see” and “understand” things other individuals seemed not able to perceive; and they knew that they could “see” beyond the body that appeared to tie them to the earth. They knew that they could change their environment simply by “thinking” about it and reaching a conclusion. However, the shaman, the seer, the holy man, the priest or the wizard did not share their unfoldment with the general population for thousands upon thousands of years and the general population failed to unfold it for themselves during that time.

Later on, an enlightened few began to share their wondrous knowledge, hoping thereby to heal the trials and tribulations of mankind. Some of those masters lived long before Jesus of Nazareth trod this earth and some lived long after. The light of understanding rose and fell through the centuries, and with each rise to the light we learned a little more.

In the sixth century before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a prince was born in a part of India that is now called Nepal.  He was Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha.  His words are today as timely as though they had just been spoken.  He said: What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday and our present thoughts build our life tomorrow.  Our life is the creation of our mind. And further, he spoke this truth: It is your mind that creates this world.

It is written that Jesus of Nazareth said: For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

A little over a hundred years later, a Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, one of the “Five Good Emperors” understood the unity of all when he wrote in his Meditations: There is one light of the sun, though it is interrupted by walls, mountains and infinite other things. There is one common substance, though it is distributed among countless bodies which have their several qualities. There is one soul, though it is distributed among several natures and individual limitations. There is one intelligent soul, though it seems to be divided.  [12.30]

After the death of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman empire began its long road to oblivion and during the next thousand-plus years the wonders of life were hidden (with a very few exceptions). During that long dark period those who spoke the truth about the world and the heavens and about life itself were either burned at the stake, boiled in oil, or silenced by fear.  It was not until the 17th century that the flame of truth about energy begin to burn once more in a very few generous minds willing and unafraid to share the truth.

In 1596 Rene Descartes was born in France and became known in history as "The Founder of Modern Philosophy" as well as "The Father of Modern Mathematics."  His thinking and understanding were as a bright light cast upon the darkness.

In 1688 with the birth of Emanuel Swedenborg in Sweden, science, mathematics, philosophy and religion were unfolded in concert to form a symphony in the mind of one man.

Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, born in 1802, was known as “The Father of New Thought” in America.  He was a kind and dedicated healer who lived in New England. He did not lean toward religion, but his unfoldment was the basis for and led to the establishment of many differing forms of New Thought, not only in this country but throughout the world.

A marvelous change in the way man looked at himself and his world began with that explosion of new thought, both scientific and philosophical, in the 1800’s.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was born in Boston in 1803. Even though his father was the Rev. Willliam Emerson, a Unitarian minister in a long and famous line of ministers, the young Emerson gradually drifted from the doctrines of his peers, then formulated and first expressed the philosophy of Transcendentalism in his 1836 essay, Nature.  Following this he gave a speech entitled "The American Scholar"  which Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (father of the Supreme Court Justice OWH Jr.) considered to be the "Intellectual Declaration of Independence."  In Emerson's wisdom, he said: Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.  This following quote of Mr. Emerson should uplift your thoughts about money:  Money, which represents the prose of life, and which is hardly spoken of in parlors without an apology, is, in its effects and laws, as beautiful as roses.
Mary Baker Eddy,  born in 1821, was among the students of Phineas Quimby who went on to found philosophical movements of their own.  She then later founded the Christian Science Church in 1879.

Thomas Troward was born in India in 1847 of British parents.  Judge Troward's twenty-five years on the Bench in India honed the already sharp edges of his mind to the point that he  gave us the most elegant prose of that era.  At this time, I have posted only one of his works on this website, but I intend to add more.  Keep looking for them.

Emma Curtis Hopkins was born in 1849.  She was healed of an illness by Mary Baker Eddy and  became a Christian Science Practitioner. She later left Christian Science to form her own philosophical organization. Many were influenced by the lectures of Emma Curtis Hopkins, and some of them went on to form churches of their own. Among these were Melinda Cramer and Nona Brooks, co-founders of Divine Science, and Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, who established the Unity School of Christianity.

Wallace Delois Wattles, born in 1860 at the beginning of the American Civil War, lived a large portion of his life in ill health and poverty but went on in later years to find health, wealth and happiness, and to write some of the most uplifting books of the new thought era.

William Walker Atkinson, born in 1862, was a brilliant attorney at law who practiced before the bars of Pennsylvania and Illinois.  He became a central and influential figure in the great expansion of understanding of mental power that occurred the last half of the Nineteenth Century and the early part of the Twentieth. His unfoldment was definitive, and has been utilized  by many who seek the truth today.  One of his great works can be found on this website, and more will be added from time to time.

Charles F. Haanel, born in 1866,  was an extraordinary man whose work “The Master Key System” is now being read all over the world.  Please study the Master Key System if you seek to unfold the potential of your wonderful mind. You can find it here on this website.  It is highly recommended for reading, studying, applying, and for exponential mental growth.

Christian Daa Larson was born in 1874 in Iowa.  Aside from that, we know very little of this giant of the "New Age."  His "Optimist Creed" is repeated worldwide by civic organizations, by religious gatherings, in football locker rooms.  Even though little can be found regarding his personal life, his writings are inspirational and can be found in a wide range of publications, including this website.

Napoleon Hill,1883-1970, was one of the earliest writers in America of the success principle alone without leaning toward the “new thought” movement. Taking the philosophy of earlier writer’s in America whose writing leaned toward “new thought,” Hill branched out and began a genre of business success writing that took off from that point and gave impetus to many who lectured on "how to" in the business world.  His book, Think and Grow Rich,  is one of the first on the reading lists of all the modern day business gurus.  His book is still under copyright, but can be purchased on Amazon.com.

Robert Collier was born in 1885 and passed from this plane of existence in 1950.  After being cured in Christian Science of an undiagnosable and lingering illness, he began to delve into the power of the mind to heal. He reasoned that if the mind could heal the body, why not the pocketbook and life in general, and from this came some of the most enlightening and uplifting works in the whole of new thought movement.   He was a member of the Collier Publishing Company, but he did not write in the business genre as did Napoleon Hill, except to teach that when one's life changes for the better, it changes for the better in every way - health, wealth and happiness.   I highly recommend the works of Robert Collier.  They are still under copyright, but can be purchased on Amazon.com.

Emmet Fox was influenced more by Ralph Waldo Emerson than by Quimby, though he studied both; and he also became personally acquainted with Judge Thomas Troward. Troward had studied in-depth most of the world’s religious and spiritual writings including the Bible, the Koran and the Bhagavad-Gita, and was, therefore, of great influence on Fox’s thinking.

Ernest Holmes, was the founder of Religious Science.  Unity, Divine Science and Religious Science are today the three largest organizations included within the International New Thought Alliance.

Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Thomas Troward, (each of whom were not considered "religious" as such) were the three major influences on the philosophy of Ernest Holmes as he moved onward in life toward his final objective, the full unfoldment of “The Science of Mind.”

IS THINKING CAUSATIVE?

Pat's Thoughts

thinking-is-causativeMany on this Earth plane today realize that thinking is causative;  and  even though many of us believe that thinking is causative, what we may not realize is this:

Simple thinking causes nothing.

Simple thinking is not "cause."

Simple thinking is merely day-dreaming.

When deep feeling and/or strong desire is correlative with thinking, thinking is no longer simply “causative,”  it then  becomes “Cause.”

Thinking is the activity or energy of Mind. (Please note specific use of the word "mind" not "brain."  Brains, by themselves, cannot think.  Only Mind thinks.) When Mind thinks, this energy forms a picture of whatever is being thought and this shows up in many places, in addition to the brain. When the energy of deep, strong feeling or desire (activity of the heart) is added to whatever Mind is thinking, then the whole of the activity, or force, or energy automatically becomes Cause.  In other words, it causes an exact replica of what is being thought and felt in any given time.

A little more than one hundred years ago, Luther Burbank said: All my investigations have led me away from the idea of a dead material universe tossed about by various forces, to that of a universe which is absolutely all force, life, soul, thought, or whatever name we choose to call it. Every atom, molecule, plant, animal or planet, is only an aggregation of organized unit forces held in place by stronger forces, thus holding them for a time latent, though teeming with inconceivable power. All life on our planet is, so to speak, just on the outer fringe of this infinite ocean of force. The universe is not half dead, but all alive.

Another great scientist of those times, Nicolas Flammarion, also said: The universe is a great organism, controlled by a dynamism of the psychical order. Mind gleams through its every atom. There is mind in everything, not only in human and animal life, but in plants, in minerals, in space.

Why have we not risen higher on the scale of being today even though this powerful truth was so plainly understood and plainly stated by ancient sages as well as being restated by many great minds a little more than a hundred years ago in this country?  What has kept a large portion of human life on this planet in the grip of poverty, sickness and death to this very day?  Why has not the power of this truth been understood by all, thus alleviating the poverty and ills of mankind?

Could the answer be that we, ourselves, are this mind power about which the wise ones speak; yet through fear or ignorance of this great truth we are denying our own power?

If we are this all-power,  this all-intelligence,  this all-love. and if we are the universe, as some wisdom teaches, then are we using this infinite power to assign all power to a cause we have imagined to be greater than ourselves?

If we are the All Power and we assign our power to anything and everything outside ourselves, that would indeed completely negate our own power, would it not?  So, if we are this All-Power, we would then find ourselves right where we put ourselves.

Even though there appear to be millions of separate souls on this plane of existence, ancient wisdom says there is only one and we are it.

So, does that mean that  mankind is in sad shape because he has “gods many?”

Or does it mean that there is only one and that one “I AM?”    Think about it.

THE SILENCE

THE SILENCE  (a note from Pat)

silenceNearly every soul, who has reached even a modicum of a state of understanding, has learned that in order to get in touch with whatever it is that they are trying to get in touch with -- they must do whatever it takes to quiet their own feeble mind that is filled with the surface thoughts of every day: the going and coming mind filled with goings and comings; the busy mind filled with busyness,  the fearful mind; the selfish mind; the I-am-a-separate-mind Mind.
