THE SILENCE

THE SILENCE  (a note from Pat)

silenceNearly every soul, who has reached even a modicum of a state of understanding, has learned that in order to get in touch with whatever it is that they are trying to get in touch with -- they must do whatever it takes to quiet their own feeble mind that is filled with the surface thoughts of every day: the going and coming mind filled with goings and comings; the busy mind filled with busyness,  the fearful mind; the selfish mind; the I-am-a-separate-mind Mind.
Mary Baker Eddy once made an excellent comment about this subject.   She said something to the effect that it was silly to long for eternal life when we have trouble quietly sitting still for one afternoon.  And that point is something we should all ponder. One way to unfold understanding is to retire into the quietness of a quiet mind.  If you can do this for a given length of time, say starting with five minutes (an eternity to a busy mind) and leading eventually to a half an hour, or more if you can do it, the resulting calm in your life will be profound. Do not let the fact discourage you that there are souls presently residing on this Earth who can sit in meditative silence for hours. Just do the best you can at first.  You’ll be glad you did.
