Spiritual Instruction
Written August 2007
Today the world wide web proliferates with spiritual instruction. Some of it comes from loving souls who have the peace, prosperity and betterment of mankind as their sole purpose. And then there’s the snake oil salesmen who hawk their wares: "How to Get Rich, Happy, and Healthy -- Immediately! Because I have discovered the secret -- for only $97.95 or $49.95 -- I will give you the secret to getting wealthy beyond your wildest dreams overnight. But wait, there’s more. If you answer before midnight, I’ll let you have the Keys to Babylon for only $19.95. I’ll only give this enormously valuable and secret information for three more days. Don’t wait. Don’t let this golden opportunity pass you by or it will be gone forever.” And some of these guys don’t even have websites of their own. They just borrow others and bounce off of them.
Now, please don’t misunderstand me. I know that on this plane of existence it looks like (even though “looks” are deceiving) "we haf ta make a livin' or we’ll starve." And I don’t begrudge anyone their living. I know as well as you know that there are many good souls out there who have been students of truth most of their lives, good souls who have uncovered the truth for themselves by much study of the old scripts, or the tomes written by the generation of the New Thought movement; or those who have studied Buddha, or Troward, or Krishnamurti, or the Tao, or Jesus of Nazareth, and who share their unfoldment generously. And many of them write magnificent books that sell for a nominal price that all can afford. They, too, find it necessary “to make a living” and have found a way to do so without defrauding their fellow humans.
Here in America when the New Thought movement was in full bloom at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century there were many who helped enlighten the world by teaching the new truth and the new unfoldment; and also during that time were those who headed out with bottles of “linament” that healed “everything” and the gullible flocked to them. We have the same thing going on today. Only the “linament” this time is "spiritual unfoldment of the speedy kind."
All I’m saying here is – just be careful. There are some that charge a nominal fee for either good information or good ebooks. There are some wonderful websites out there that share their unfoldment “for free” such as Simon Templeton’s www.psitek.net. And there are some that share their wealth of knowledge and only ask that you donate some small sum to help with their expenses. Those who do the transcribing of the great literature do so without pay. Such a site is www.gutenberg.org.
So, if you pay particular attention to what you are clicking on, and use care in your choice, as with anything else in life, you will do just fine.
